Youth Poet Laureate Contest

We're looking for bold, brilliant voices in grades 9–11 who are eager 
to speak truth through poetry. Whether you write in a notebook, tap it 
out on your device or freestyle with your friends, your words matter

Step up, stand out, and let Fresno County know: "This is why I write."
 

APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS: 

  1. You must be enrolled in a public school within Fresno County (students from charter schools, alternative schools, and comprehensive high schools are welcome to apply).
  2. You must accurately complete the form below.
  3. You must submit a signed Parent/Guardian Release & Waiver of Liability.
  4. You must use the form below to submit the following items which will be your portfolio:
  • 5 original poems (any length) – one poem must align to this year's theme: "This is Why I Write: When the world gets loud, poetry speaks louder" – Poems must be submitted as a single document.
  • An updated CV/resume (curriculum vitae) highlighting the poet's accomplishments, accolades, and public service. This CV/resume is an opportunity to share everything you have done, so put it all in there. Feel free to BRAG about yourself and your accomplishments.
  • A high-quality headshot (any image that shows the poet only and that they will feel good seeing on the program – it does NOT need to be a professional headshot)

Fresno County's Youth Poet Laureate Program

The Fresno County Youth Poet Laureate Program is conducted by the Fresno County Superintendent of Schools in partnership with Urban Word, the producer of the National Youth Poet Laureate Program and Movement. This program celebrates youth voices that are committed to artistic excellence, civic engagement and social impact. Supported by the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities, the Academy of American Poets, the Poetry Society of America and numerous other local and national literary organizations our goal is to elevate the role that youth poets play in enriching our cultural lives and impacting change in our communities.
